Madhuri Jalan a painter,
ceramist and a glass artist
born in 1940 in Rangoon.
Studied ceramics under the
guidance of Mr. D. V. Morray,
Prof. Government Collage of
Art and Craft Kolkata and
has attended courses at the
School of the Museum Fine
Arts, Boston, U.S.A. What
she enjoys most in ceramics
is ‘Raku’ - a Japanese
technique of firing. She
took up working with glass
as a medium in 1999 and to
begin with was entirely self
taught and learnt by reading
and experimenting. She later
honed her skills by
attending causes at Penland
School of Craft, North
Carolina at Urban Glass and
Corning in New York. Today,
she is one of the few
artists in India who works
in glass. Neither liquid nor
solid, glass with its unique
physical properties, its
brilliant hues and glowing
radiance is a perfect foil
for Madhuri Jalan’s art. Her
work is suffused by a lively
bland of imaginary, texture
and form. It is a meeting
point for the old, new, the
traditional and the modern.
And through it all runs an
ever-present theme of
experimentation and a
delight in the unexplored.
She’s best here, in her
glass art, where her innate
joy finds an exuberant and
uninhibited expression.
She work in ceramics and
have been exhibited a number
of times in Kolkata and
Mumbai. |
